A Test to Detect PSP Early?

Yes, you read that correctly!

There is research into using an interesting change in the spinal fluid and blood of an individual with PSP.

In PSP, the levels of something called neurofilament light chain (abbreviated NfL) increase. Hmmm. This is interesting.

The levels of NfL are not increased in individuals with Parkinsons. However, increased levels do occur in other diseases such as MSA and Alzheimer’s.

What is NfL?

Neurofilament light chain (NfL) is a specific “protein in the spinal fluid and blood.” (1)

Another interesting fact regarding NfL and PSP: the level of NfL increases as PSP disease progresses.

One could clearly see how this could be very beneficial in detecting these neurogenerative diseases and perhaps even useful in observing the effectiveness of treatment.
